2018 Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship

In 2018, The Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at the Keokuk Area Community Foundation for graduating seniors from any Keokuk Iowa High School. To be eligible for The Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship, students be in the Top 25% of their graduating class, display high academic achievement, demonstrate a financial need and plan to enroll in an Iowa College or Iowa University upon their high school graduation. The Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship selected Keokuk High School seniors Kara Kavanagh and Daniel Rubio as the first scholarship recipients.

Kara Kavanagh was awarded a scholarship to Mount Mercy University, where she will study Elementary Education. Kara Kavanagh was selected to be a The Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship recipient for her high academic and leadership achievements at Keokuk High School. As a future teacher, Miss Kavanagh hopes “to walk into work everyday knowing that I could possibly shape a life. I want to inspire and motivate with everything I do. I want to be the teacher that every kid remembers when they graduate and write about in their college scholarship essays.”

Daniel Rubio was awarded a scholarship to study at Southeastern Community College, where he will pursue a career in biology. Daniel Rubio was selected to be a Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship Recipient for his high academic performance and his community volunteer activities. Daniel’s future career interests in biology are to: “make our world better, safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable. By this, I mean not only greatly improving the quality of our natural environment, but also to impact people I meet through positive interactions by influencing them to learn to appreciate and enjoy nature.”

Some of Daniel Rubio’s volunteer activities include:

  • Volunteer Services for Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce

  • Volunteer Services for Keokuk Animal Services

  • Volunteer construction of Bentley’s Playground for special needs children in Tolmie Park.

Each Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship was for $1,000.00 or more per year. Each scholarship will be renewable scholarship for a second, third and fourth year, provided the student has maintained high academic achievement at the Iowa college or university they attend.
